Part Time – Research Assistant (Weekends)

Novome is building genetically engineered microbial medicines (GEMMs) that perform defined activities in the human gut to treat chronic diseases. We have developed the first platform for controlled colonization of the gut with engineered therapeutic bacteria and are applying this to multiple disease areas as well as expanding our platform capabilities. We are focusing current research efforts on making a microbial cell therapy to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

We are seeking a part-time Research Assistant to support both our Animal Research and Strain Engineering teams over the weekends. The Research Assistant will play a critical role in carrying out operations for our ongoing in vivo studies, as well as performing molecular biology techniques to progress our engineered bacterial strains through our strain engineering pipeline. They will receive thorough training in both basic animal handling and sampling techniques, as well as molecular biology and microbiology techniques. Once trained, the Research Assistant will be required to work highly independently in the vivarium and laboratory over the weekend.

Responsibilities

  • Performing all animal study activity on Saturdays and Sundays, including:
    • Administering custom diets and water
    • Taking animal weights, body condition scores, fecal, and urine samples
    • Data entry in Microsoft Excel
  • Performing all strain engineering activity on Saturdays and Sundays, including:
    • Picking bacterial colonies and cryogenic storage of bacterial strains
    • Preparation of plasmid DNA and analyzing Sanger sequencing data
    • Cloning and screening unique DNA constructs
    • Performing Next Gen sequencing on new bacterial strains
  • Contributing to laboratory support functions as needed
  • Using our Electronic Lab Notebook system to keep detailed records
  • Meeting with teams on Fridays to discuss work plan for weekend

Key Qualifications

  • Currently a Masters or Bachelor’s Degree student, or holds a Bachelor’s degree in a biological science
  • Strong history of college-level biology coursework
  • Experience in college-level laboratory courses, microbiology lab preferred
  • Comfort working with mice in a laboratory setting, prior handling experience preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Exceptional attention to detail and excellent communication skills
  • High standards for the quality of their work
  • Openness to giving and receiving critical feedback
  • Ability to transport lab supplies between the company and our vivarium, within South San Francisco
